Montesquieu

Montesquieus famous book Spirit of the Laws.  This is one of Montesquieus greatess works and probably the best known one.  Some of his ideas in this book were read by Thomas Jefferson and some of Montesquieus ideas he used.

Montesquieus aim is to explain human laws and social institutions.  This might seem like an impossible project to explain physical laws that are institued by god.  Also to explain positive laws and social institutions that are created by fallible beings.  He explains what kind of things the government can and cannot do to man and also the rights of man.

His book was greatly influenced by John Locke.  John Locke came up with the ideas of life, liberty and property.  Montesquieu also shared these same ideas.  He was a follower of John and his ideas.  Montesquieu studied three types of governements republic, monarchy and despotism.  A republic governemtn was one ruled by the people.  A monarchy was ruled by a king or a queen.  A despotism was one ruled by a military leader.  He also wanted three differnet branches of government.  He came up with an executive branch, which was tovote and carry out laws, a judical branch, which was supream court, and a legislative branch, which came up with the laws.  he also had a sytem called checks and balance were no one branch had more power than the other and each could check over the other.

The book was admired for its depth, clarrity and brilliant unadorned style.  He also said there are multiple solutions to the problems of fovernment and freedom.
